Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition 2011_Portraits

The last two photos were entered into the Portrait category: “Portraits should capture the unique character or spirit of the animal. Images should be imaginative and convey a sense of intimacy and immediacy.”

While driving around Kruger National Park, South Africa, on a bleak afternoon we were lucky enough to spot this elegant Tawny Eagle; beautifully poised on this decaying tree. Andy captured this image in a way that shows both the dreariness of the day and the isolation of the Tawny Eagle.

After a long, uneventful afternoon in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana, we prepared to leave a barren waterhole. On leaving we were startled at the beautiful sight of this leopard walking confidently across the road and into the long grass, where he sat and watched Andy take his photo for some time before he disappeared as quickly as he came. We were shocked by the sighting and it is a photo that holds great emotional sentiment to us, we managed to find a Leopard in the wild and to share a brief yet exhilerating time alone with him.
