The beautiful male frigate bird

The male frigate bird goes to great lengths to attract a female. Photographing them on the Galapagos islands was a treat.

As a female silhouetted the sky chaos ensued. Wings would suddenly stretch out and vibrate, a loud drum like call would fill the air, and inflated red sacs would ballon under the chin of the hopefully males. This is a spectacle to watch.

As the the female flies off unimpressed a sea of dejected males resting their heads on their over inflated pouches is both comical and sad!
